General preventive measures against diseases of the eyes

  • Do now: Use wrap-around UV-blocking sunglasses & hats outdoors, take screen breaks (20-20-20 rule), avoid eye rubbing, keep lenses/cases clean.
  • Watch for: Persistent redness, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, flashes/floaters, blurred or reduced vision.
  • Get help if: Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, chemical splash, penetrating injury, or a foreign body that won’t flush out.

  • Sudden vision loss or a “curtain” over vision, new flashes/floaters
  • Severe eye pain, chemical splash, or penetrating eye injury
  • Marked light sensitivity with headache/fever, or swelling that spreads

Lifestyle measures

  • Avoid direct/prolonged exposure to light and sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation (e.g., the sun)
  • Wear sunglasses—preferably close-fitting wrap-around—to reduce UV and atmospheric pollution exposure
  • Wear a hat in addition for added protection when outdoors
  • Regular (yearly) routine general medical screening
  • Report illness early to authorized medical facilities
  • Avoid alcohol as much as possible
  • Avoid smoking and smoking environment
  • At least 30 minutes of exercise (like walking) per day
  • Deliberate efforts at eating locally available nutritious and healthy foods
  • Drink water liberally daily (at least 3 litres for adults and for children, see Children Preventive Path)
  • Discuss your traditional beliefs and practices regarding your health with your doctor in order to avoid harmful practices
